November 9: Interesting picture
of snow on a garlic bed!
|
 |
November 1: For 2012, we have
decided to drop our USDA Organic Certification due to cost and
our reduced amount of garlic planted for the 2012 crop. We
will still have some Certified Naturally Grown garlic
(following the same procedures as Certified Organic, but
certified through a different organization), and also some
uncertified, pesticide free garlic for sale.

October
27: Planting for 2011 is finished! And we only have a few
pounds of garlic left in inventory. Looking forward to a
little rest this fall before winter!

October
11: We are nearly finished planting, and have added the
garlic we couldn't fit into our field back into the shopping
cart. Click the cart icon to the right to see what is
available for purchase!
|
 |
September 13: There is no need to
purchase a garlic measuring device. Click
here for free
plans to create your own garlic measurer. 5-minute assembly!
;-)
|
 |
August 30: Most orders placed
before July 15th have been shipped, and we will continue to
ship after Labor Day. Shipping is suspended for the remainder
of this week, as we do not want garlic to arrive if you are
away from home over the holiday weekend. Click
here for more information
about shipping in 2011.
|
 |
August 3: We are cutting and
weighing the garlic now that it has fully cured, and hope to
complete inventory and add additional varieties to the
shopping cart by mid September.
|
 |
July 6: We are digging garlic!
It's exciting to see a year's work come out of the field.
As we get better inventory estimates, we
may be able to offer additional varieties for sale again the
the Shopping Cart.
|
 |
|
June 27: It is
almost harvest time! We are hoping to begin harvesting within
a week. The garlic will cure/dry here for a minimum of three
weeks (this time depends upon harvest conditions, temperature,
humidity, etc. during the drying time). We will then begin
shipping chronologically by order date. Orders
placed via our shopping cart should receive an e-mail notice
at the time of shipping.
|
|
|
Garlic scapes will be ready around June 10th! A plastic
grocery bag full weighs 4 to 10 lbs and costs $5. Process in your
food processor for freezing or pesto, or use sections for grilling
or gourmet recipes!
Check out our
Garlic Scape
Recipes page for this tasty wonder!
Call

to schedule a pick up time so we can pick fresh scapes for
you. No online ordering of scapes (no shipping)...cash pick up

March 20:
The garlic is growing wonderfully, and we're watching it
progress on almost a daily basis as the weather and soil warm.
German Red continues to amaze us with superb hardiness, as do
most of our varieties. A couple worried us last week, but this
week have peeked through the ground and will probably catch up
quickly. Fireball is well advanced over the other varieties.
It's fun to see how they differ in the early spring, just like
their flavors differ after harvest! |

December 1:
Toni's end of the field happened upon a lucky discovery. Some
fresh garlic vinaigrette dressing was over 2 weeks old, so was
used to marinate chicken breasts all day yesterday. At the end
of the day, it was dumped into a casserole dish and baked
until the chicken was done. It was the best, most moist and
tender chicken breast we'd ever had! See our recipes page for
a vinaigrette recipe similar to the one we used.
On a side note, we just discovered
that our organic certificate was displayed HUGE on our home
page for who-knows-how-long. Our best guess is that the cat
stepped on the keyboard one night and accidentally uploaded
the site with a big picture pasted on the home page.

October 17: We are
nearly finished planting for our 2011 crop, and have been
blessed with comfortable temperatures and no rain during this
time! Last year, we had snow in early October, so this is a
welcomed change for planting! Pictured at right is some
Elephant seed dropped into marked furrows prior to setting
down deeper into the ground. We hope to have a lot more
Elephant to offer for sale next year!
|
 |
October 12:
We may have seed garlic available after
we finish planting, which we hope
will be by October 17. If you would like to be notified via
e-mail in the case we have seed available,
|
|
September 17: We
are SOLD OUT of seed garlic for the season. It is time to
prepare the fields for planting, which will begin in the next
couple weeks. Time has flown by, and we are looking forward to
a great 2011!
|
|
September 14: New
Bulk Order Pricing is available in our shopping cart!
|
|
September 9: Well,
it's safe to say that 2010 has been a rough year for garlic growers
in most parts of the country, and we are no different. Not only did
it take about 4 times as long as normal to clean our garlic before
shipping, but the excessive rains prior to harvest led to a lot of
unpredicted damage to some of the bulbs. Even after harvesting and
cleaning, we had to re-inspect every bulb at shipping time, after
the garlic dried, for new signs of water damage.
We want to express our thanks to our many
gracious customers who understood the extensive work our 2010
weather caused us, and for their understanding regarding the
resulting delay in shipping.

|
|
September 8:
Yesterday, we visited our parents and took garlic to give to
Mom. She had garlic left over from last year, and it was still
good! It was hardneck garlic, which is not supposed to store
for this long. But hers was still firm and looked like it was
from the new crop. Amazing!
|
|
|
September 1:
Current orders are being processed, and we are
about 1/3rd completed. E-mail
updates will be sent as orders ship. Please open your garlic
upon receipt so it can "breathe," and store in a cool, dry
location until your planting season arrives.
|
|
|
August 18 and 23:
Current orders should be shipped around September
1st. E-mail updates will be sent as
orders ship. We are cleaning our last two varieties, and it's slow
going with only the 2 Sisters to work on it. The kids are back
in school, so we're plugging away by ourselves. :-)
|
|
August 12: The 2010 garlic
harvest is now cured/dried, and we are
preparing to ship beginning next week.
We dry/cure our garlic longer than some producers, as we want
to ship you the number of pounds you ordered after the
loss of extra water weight. This ensures that you aren't
paying for water weight. It also helps avoid rot while you
store the garlic prior to planting.
|
|
|
July 19: The 2010 garlic harvest
is complete and the crop is hanging to cure/dry. What a
beautiful sight it is!
We anticipate
shipping to begin in mid August. |
|
|
July 4: Harvest time is here!
We have harvested the elephant and are working on softnecks.
Of course, we are taste testing as we go. Today's specialty is
roasted garlic on the grill. FANtastic! |
 |
June 18: We have some
REALLY nice garlic growing in the fields. Despite an extremely
wet spring, there are some bulbs that are as large or larger
than any we've grown in the past. It is hard to not dig them
up to check them out! We have been busy hand-pulling weeds (we
are truly organic growers, despite the complaints from our
lumbar vertebrae!), and are looking forward to harvest coming
up!
|
|
|
June 10:
Instead of mowing yards or paper routes, our kids are pickin'
and sellin' scapes. They can be purchased at our farms at
Bedford or Blockton, Iowa.
Update June 18, 2010:
Scapes are SOLD OUT!

Garlic Scape
Recipes page for this tasty wonder!

| April 21:
Thanks to everyone that contributed to our never-ending quest
for knowledge and opinions by taking our survey this past
winter. The two sisters will soon get together with a large
hat full of names, and will have someone draw the winner (to
be announced via e-mail and on our site). Check our
pictures of the 2010 fields...we will again have a LOT of
varieties of gourmet, organic garlic available this summer! |
 |
|
January 23: Help us improve, so
we can offer the varieties, sizes, and certifications you hope
for. Take our
survey, and you'll be entered into a drawing for F-R-E-E
Garlic! (Congratulations to our winner in Kansas!) |
 |
| January 6:
What a winter so far! Thankfully, we have snow on the ground
to insulate the garlic from the frigid temperatures. Mulch and
snow are both good insulators. |
|
November 11:
We are now both
Certified Organic, and also
Certified Naturally Grown! More information about our new
certification will come soon.
|
  |
|
2009 (below) |
October 25: We
have several boxes of seed garlic that are for sale in our
shopping cart. The boxes include a
variety of bulb sizes that are mostly 1 to 2" in diameter,
with larger bulbs in some of the varieties. The boxes vary in
weight from 4 to 10 lbs each.
|
 |
October 9:
Planting for 2 Sisters means that every garlic seed is
individually planted (not placed by automated machinery). It
takes us a lot of time, but we like knowing that every clove
is planted individually. The weather is going to make this
next week's planting a challenge! Cold temps are on their way
tonight. But, we'll soon be finished and hope to see the
garlic peek through the ground before winter sets in.
|
|
October 1: We
are well into our planting now, and feel we may have
average-sized seed garlic left over to offer for sale late in
October. We are considering offering it in "lots" of about 10
lbs each, uncleaned. E-mail us to be placed on our e-mail
notification list or check back in a couple weeks for updates.
|
|
August 28:
Most of our garlic orders have been shipped, though were
delayed due to high humidity (we felt it would be best for our
garlic quality to package it when the air was drier). So
be looking for your garlic soon!
|
|
August 16: It's
almost shipping time! "Thank you" to our customers, and look
soon for your garlic to be shipped from 2 Sisters Garlic! We
are already preparing new field locations for our 2010 crop
(we practice crop rotation to preserve soil and garlic
quality). New locations will be worked many times to aerate
the soil and control weeds, and past fields will be replanted
with organic crops to amend/replenish the soil with nutrients.
There is always something going on here!
|
 |
| July 26: We are
halfway through the harvest, and have some beautiful garlic
hanging to dry. It's fun to "taste test" right in the field!
Special thanks to Ben Wantland, Matt and Jody Hess for coming
out to pitch in! Some of
our varieties are sold out or nearly sold out for the
large-sized bulbs (and so we've marked them as such in the
shopping cart), but we still have the average/culinary
sizes--up to 2" in diameter--available in most varieties.
By August 7th, we will be able to re-evaluate our harvest
quantities of large-sized bulbs, and may be able to offer some
for sale again. |
 |
| July 11: Harvest is
upon us! We will be harvesting the garlic and hanging it to
dry for the next couple weeks, and will be able to ship garlic
out in mid-August and after. |
 |
|
June 23:
Our shopping cart is now online, and we are accepting
orders for the 2009 crop. Order early, before your favorite
varieties are sold out! |
 |
|
June 1:
Garlic Scapes are for sale
through June, available fresh from the field
in Bedford and Blockton, Iowa!
